Governor says fair will not be cancelled under his watch

Governor Mike Parson says some form of the Missouri State Fair WILL be held in August, “The State Fair has only been cancelled one time in over 100 years and it was during World War II.  As an ag governor I guess I want to say, somebody that comes from a farm, I don’t want it to be the second time, on my watch, that it’s cancelled.”

A statement from fair officials said there would be definitely be livestock shows. Parson says that speaks to the core values of the state fair.

“It’s about youth in agriculture and supporting agriculture. So, my direction is get back to those basics, do what we’ve got to do and maybe some of those other things we won’t do. But, anyhow, we want to do it and be as safe as possible but we plan on having the State Fair here in Missouri.”

Parson says he likely would not host a ham breakfast this year, “I doubt there’ll be a ham breakfast because it’s the Governor’s Ham Breakfast, so I doubt that I’m going to be asking for that.”

Parson says there may be other things that are different like shorter hours or fewer days and that will be up to the Missouri State Fair Commission to decide.  Fair officials say the dates of the fair are August 13th through 23rd in Sedalia and that fair updates will be shared as they are decided.

Parson said the state of Missouri will reopen and enter phase two of its  Show Me Recovery plan on June 16th but urged social distancing will still be necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
