Genetics, testing cooperatives plan to merge

Two livestock genetics cooperatives plan to merge early next year.  The boards of directors for Wisconsin based East Central/Select Sires and Michigan based NorthStar Cooperative unanimously agreed to pursue the merger starting May 1st if their memberships vote in favor of the move.

The new business would be called CentralStar Cooperative Inc.  The two businesses do not have overlapping territories, and leaders say all current locations will remain open.  The companies say a completed merger will also lead to expanded diagnostic testing services in southern Wisconsin.

In a statement, NorthStar Cooperative and East Central/Select Sires say their goal is to bring more value to dairy and beef producers in Wisconsin, Michigan, and north of Highway 50 in Indiana.  Members and delegates will vote early next year.

The combined cooperatives would offer Accelerated Genetics, GenerVations, and Select Sires genetics, extensive artificial-insemination technician service, genetic consultation, reproduction services, DHI services, diagnostic testing, herd-management products, as well as research and development.
