General Mills makes regenerative ag commitment

A shareholder advocacy group applauds a recent announcement that General Mills is committing to advance one million acres of farmland to holistic practices by 2030.

Christy Spees, environmental program manager for California non-profit As You Sow, says the food company giant is investing in regenerative agriculture.

“The aim is healthier soil, more bio-diversity, capturing carbon in the soil to make the farm not only less destructive, but actually promoting long-term sustainability of that soil and land.”

General Mills says it will partner with organic and conventional farmers, suppliers, and trusted farm advisors in key growing regions to drive the adoption of regenerative ag practices.

The company estimates the global food system accounts for roughly one-third of greenhouse gas emissions and 70 percent of water consumption.
