GAO says FCC lacks transparency on rural, urban broadband speed reporting

A report from the Government Accountability Office has found the Federal Communications Commission lacks transparency when assessing broadband speeds in rural and urban areas.

The study found inconsistencies in the commission’s speed benchmark reporting between 2015 and 2021. Accurate reporting could benefit farmers who often rely on connectivity to remain profitable.

The GAO is asking the FCC Chair to share how the agency updates its metrics to assess broadband speeds and deployment. The FCC has agreed with the recommendation.
