G8 scolded for slowness on climate change

United Nation’s chief Ban Ki-moon reportedly admonished G8 world leaders at their summit in Italy Thursday for not doing enough to reverse global warming. According to Reuters, the eight rich nations did not get major greenhouse gas emitters China and India to agree to reduce global emissions by 50 percent by 2050. President Barak Obama said the world had made “important strides” by agreeing to limit global warming (to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Obama, though, said China and India’s “active participation is a prerequisite for a solution” to climate change. Meanwhile, in Washington, Senate leaders pushed back the date for working on the House-passed climate change bill.

Also Thursday, G8 leaders agreed to resume the stalled Doha round of WTO trade talks with the goal of wrapping them up by 2010.
