Future of U.S. water policy unclear

For the Irrigation Association, infrastructure remains a key component in US water policy.

“It’s all intergrated water management. So from the source of the water, how it gets to the farm, how it’s applied and where it goes after that,” says Farner.

John Farner, the association’s Government and Public Affairs Director, tells Brownfield focusing irrigation resources to address drought and flood conditions – which change year to year – is a major challenge. He says the future of U.S. water policy, following the Presidential election, is unknown.

“Whether it’s the endangered species act, Clean Water Act, water use, everything’s up in the air right now. Over the next few months we’re going to study and see where President-Elect Trump takes his administration, who he appoints to different agencies and USDA,” says Farner.

Farner says Trump’s plans for U.S. infrastructure improvements are encouraging but it remains to be seen which direction he will take U.S. water policy.
