FSA outreach on CFAP as deadline approaches

The deadline for producers to sign up for the USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) is approaching. The deadline has been extended to September 11TH.

FSA Administrator Richard Fordyce says they’ve added more commodities to the program and are seeing a lag in specialty crop producers applying for the direct payment relief.  He says FSA analyzes the program and its reach every day.

“We have redoubled our outreach efforts and our communication efforts to make sure that folks are aware of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program and getting every producer POSSIBLE in and get signed up.”

Fordyce says they had fewer specialty crop growers than expected apply for the direct relief, “It was that quarter-one time period and so specialty crop production, the actual growing of those crops, probably not a lot. Certainly California, Texas, Florida (not so much elsewhere).”

More than 160 commodities are eligible for CFAP.  Producers can apply online at farmers.gov/cfap

Fordyce, while at the Central and Northeast Missouri Food Bank last week told Brownfield Ag News he had been hearing from Missouri producers who had received their payments.
