FSA offers disaster loans to April blizzard victims

More than 50 counties in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota are eligible for FSA emergency low-interest loans because of damage from Winter Storm Evelyn, the April blizzard that dumped more than 30 inches of snow in parts of the Great Lakes Region.

FSA Wis. Director Sandy Chalmers, Wis. Ag Secretary Sheila Harsdorf, Gov. Scott Walker meet with Birling’s Bovines staff after April blizzard damaged farm buildings

Wisconsin FSA Director Sandy Chalmers tells Brownfield the historic storm that began April 13th had more than property damage.  “We had reports of calves and lamb losses really across the entire state, and then much damage to buildings, farm structures including free stall barns.”

Chalmers says they are aware of farmers waiting for these low-interest loans to become available, and the agency has also worked with some private lenders to guarantee some loans to repair damages.  She says existing FSA borrowers won’t have to worry about making payments on two loans at once.  “This disaster declaration makes available a disaster set-aside on your loans where we can take the annual installment and move it to the end of the loan terms, so that would free up some cash for these farmers.”

Chalmers says FSA loan teams are ready to assist farmers with applications.

Along with 52 Wisconsin counties, producers in Dickinson and Menominee in Michigan and Chisago, Houston, Pine, Washington and Winona in Minnesota are eligible to apply.

Sandy Chalmers speaks to Brownfield’s Larry Lee about the disaster loans.
