Free UW tuition program deadline Dec. 1st

The deadline has arrived for families to take advantage of a free college tuition program next fall at the University of Wisconsin Madison.  Dairy Management Instructor Ted Halbach says, “Parents would have to fill out the FAFSA form by December first, so we’re really coming right up on that deadline.”

Halbach says Bucky’s Tuition Promise applies to many programs, but with low commodity prices impacting farm families, the program’s timing couldn’t be better.  “I think that this is really a deal maker for a lot of kids that are from farm families, knowing the commodity prices are really low and that they’ve been low, so I have to imagine that there are dairy farm families out there that are struggling financially that would meet the criteria of this program.”

If the Wisconsin student’s parents have an adjusted household income below 56-thousand dollars, the student can apply to attend the University of Wisconsin tuition-free for four years, and transfer students can go tuition-free for two years.

Halback says the farm economy might be down, but there’s still strong demand for their Dairy Science graduates.  “Our students have 100% placement, and there’s good paying jobs.  (In the) last graduating class, the average salary was $50,000 plus.”

Halback says the first step for parents is to go to the UW Madison web page and click on financial aid for details, and for student… keep your grades up.

Other land-grant universities including Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio have a similar program.

The Bucky’s Tuition Promise sign up deadline for next fall’s classes is December 1st, but general applications for fall admission are due February 1st.
