Food & Water Watch calls for “factory farm” ban

The group Food & Water Watch wants a ban on what it calls “factory farming” after a federal jury ruled against a North Carolina hog farm.

The judgement against the Smithfield/Murphy Brown hog operation in the nuisance lawsuit brought by neighbors was originally more than $50-Million dollars but reduced by the judge to $3-Million-dollars last week, because of restrictions in state law.

Food & Water Watch says the way “industrial-scale hog farms” handle animal waste is turning communities into “agribusiness-controlled nightmares.” Their report calls on state and federal governments to ban the building and expansion of industrial farms in support of smaller, diversified livestock operations.

Smithfield Foods is appealing the ruling.
