Fluid milk donations underway for next 12 months

USDA made its first fluid milk donation this week as part of a $50 million purchase plan.

Bruce Summers with USDA’s Marketing Service says 12 to 15 million gallons of milk will delivered to food banks over the next year.  “We know we have a lot of milk out in the country side, more than we’re able to sell right now and so this is an opportunity to match up demand with supply and do it in a really efficient way.”

This is the first time USDA had made a purchase of fluid milk for food assistance.  The purchases are separate from the nearly $85,000 dairy product buy earmarked through the Trade Mitigation Program.

Officials say fluid milk donations have been limited in the past because of necessary refrigeration, but it’s one of the most requested food items.

More than 4,000 half gallons were donated to one of Washington D.C.’s largest food bank with plans in place for regular donations throughout the country in 2019.
