Flu vaccinations recommended

As part of the pork industry’s “We Care” approach to protecting producers, employees and the public, comes a reminder that as the U.S. enters the flu season, it is time to get that seasonal flu vaccination.

Dr. Lisa Becton, director of swine health for the Pork Checkoff says that in addition to the vaccine there are other steps that can be taken to protect workers and pigs from the flu.

“Keep sick workers out of the barn and if humans can get vaccinations that’s always a good point,” said Becton. “And then other basic sanitary things like cough or sneeze into your sleeve, wash your hands with soap and water, things like that can help reduce the incidence and spread of influenza.”

A factsheet on influenza is available from the Pork Checkoff.
