Flooding downs farm fences, closes roads

An east-central Missouri cattle producer says a lot of his neighbors have been harmed by the intense rain and flooding this week. Charlie Gerloff tells Brownfield Ag News he’s not had any cattle losses but quite a few farms are suffering, along the Gasconade River and further south near the towns of Rolla and Bland, Missouri.  He says, “I had one place that might have had 15 inches (of rain). Another guy I talked to who buys bulls from us said he had fence out for two miles on the Gasconade. So, he’s got quite a battle ahead of him.”

Gerloff says neighbors helped a young couple raise their levee to protect their century-old, newly-restored farm house but LOST the battle. He considers himself blessed, “We really haven’t had it that bad. Those people that’s been hit hard, lost their homes, and that type of thing – why, that’s quite a loss.”

Many acres of Missouri corn will have to be replanted. Hundreds of roads have been closed in Missouri.  At least five deaths have been attributed to the flooding in the state.
