First Wisconsin Dairy Summit set for June 19th

A first-ever Wisconsin Dairy Summit is coming up June 19th.  Wisconsin Ag Secretary Ben Brancel says the University of Wisconsin System put the summit together after receiving a letter from state legislators asking if research expansion was possible.

Brancel says the event will bring together different segments of the industry.  “I think a lot of the dairy industry, each person knows their own segment but nobody knows what’s going on in another part of the dairy industry, so this will be an overview of the dairy industry, historically where are we and where might we go.”

And Brancel says the summit will not address specific situations like the recent loss of processing for 75 farms but will talk about the overall structure of the state’s dairy industry.  “Where have we marketed our milk in the past? How have we marketed our milk?  Who’s out there in the processing community and what are they looking for when it comes to milk for their products for their marketplace, and how has the marketplace changed?”

Brancel says his department will have direct discussions with the participants after the event.

Experts will present the latest in research and dairy production techniques.  Summit organizers want to create dialogue and partnerships to give the industry a more prosperous and secure future.

The Wisconsin Dairy Summit is the first part of the college’s 2020FWD planning initiative. It will be held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
