First Peas to the Table winner announced

A Tennessee school has won the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture’s First Peas to the Table Contest.

Mary Tomlin’s third-grade class at Fayette Academy (in Somerville, Tennessee) wins the grand prize – a visit from Miss America 2017 Savvy Shields.

First Peas is a national competition for schools and encourages children in kindergarten through fifth grade to plant, raise, and harvest peas.  Students competed to grow the greatest amount of peas (measured in cups) from February 20 through May 15.  Tomlin’s class harvested 8 cups of peas.

The contest highlights the Foundation’s 2016 Book of the Year First Peas to the Table by Susan Grigsby and was created to help students understand the importance of healthy foods and agriculture and to increase their knowledge of how plants grow.

Ten schools submitted pea measurements, more schools participated but some peas were not ready to harvest at the end of the contest.first
