First Iowa corn rating released

The first condition rating of the season for Iowa’s corn crop puts the crop at 12 percent excellent, 63 percent good, 22 percent fair and 3 percent poor to very poor.

As of Sunday, 92 percent of Iowa’s corn crop was planted, two days ahead of the five-year average. Corn emergence was 59 percent, four days behind last year.

Soybean planting reached 62 percent complete and 15 percent of soybeans had emerged.

The first cutting of alfalfa hay advanced to eight percent complete with the crop rate 82 percent good to excellent. Pasture conditions remained at 82 percent good to excellent.

“Farmers took full advantage of the less than two and a half days suitable for field work to plant seven percent of anticipated corn acres and 22 percent of soybean acres,” said Iowa ag secretary Bill Northey. “The spotty showers and sometimes heavy rains made it difficult to make much planting progress, especially in the later part of the week.  As we approach the end of May, farmers are very anxious to finish planting and we hope for agreeable conditions to allow that to happen.”
