Some fieldwork delays in Michigan

Scattered rain events delayed field work ’til late last week for many Michigan farmers.

The Great Lakes Regional Ag Statistics office says 95 percent of the state’s corn crop has matured, slightly ahead of the five year average. The crop’s condition increased two points to 55 percent good to excellent. Corn silage harvested was 92 percent complete as of Sunday, grain harvest was 57 percent. Soybeans are 97 percent dropping leaves, 51 percent harvested and soybean condition gained five points to 72 percent good to excellent. Seventy-three percent of winter wheat has been planted.

Dry beans are 88 percent harvested.  Sugarbeet condition gained three points to 72 percent good to excellent and 34 percent of the crop is harvested. The third cutting of alfalfa is 95 percent complete, fourth cutting is at 64 percent.

In USDA’s last fruit report of the season, apple harvest wrapping up in southwest Michigan. Grape and cranberry harvests is still underway.
