Field day guides farmers on crop management during challenging year

A field day at the University of Illinois’ Ewing Demonstration Center focused on management practices specific to the situations farmers are facing this season.

The Ewing Demonstration Center was founded in 1910 and has been no-till in some fields for 51 years. Nathan Johanning tells Brownfield this year’s field day aimed to help farmers with management practices during one of the most challenging years.

“Disease, insect and weed management and also cover crops especially with the focus being on delayed planting and prevent planting. What can we do for best management in all of those scenarios?”

Mark Lamczyk says like many Illinois farmers, they are also in a trial year of growing industrial hemp.

“We have had several questions about that. One of the biggest hurdles to overcome is some of the marketing after the fact. We are just in it right now to do some variety testing and see what going on and how it is going to turn out later this fall.”

Johanning says phosphorus loss and water quality are also hot topics in southern Illinois as farmers work with the Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy.
