Fertilizer is top input expense for Missouri farmers

University of Missouri Extension Ag Economist Ray Massey says fertilizer will be the most expensive input for Missouri crop farmers in 2023. He says prices have doubled from this time last year.

“The supply and demand fundamentals of fertilizer indicate it’s not coming down before next spring, when farmers need to apply it on the crop.”

Massey says farmers are contemplating whether they should pre-order spring fertilizer.

“Pre-ordering fertilizer is probably not a bad idea, but we’ll see.”

Massey was part of the Extension Ag Lender Seminar that wrapped up this (or last) week in Jefferson City.
