Federal workers seek coronavirus hazard pay

A group of five federal workers has filed a class action lawsuit requesting hazard pay for working during the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the plaintiffs is an inspector for the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The lawsuit says the plaintiffs have continued to work near objects, surfaces, or individuals infected with the virus since January 27th. They are seeking to represent themselves and other federal employees who have also been exposed to the virus.

The plaintiffs want 25-percent hazard pay for employees who work with materials that can cause serious disease or death. General schedule employees would be eligible for a 25-percent increase in pay for duty involving a hardship or hazard.

The lawsuit also seeks 4 or 8 percent differentials for wage-grade employees who worked with hazardous microorganisms.
