FDA seeks comments on ultra-filtered milk

The Food and Drug Administration is reopening the comment period on its proposed rule to allow ultra-filtered milk in some cheese products.

The proposed rule, which was issued in 2005, allowed ultra-filtered milk to be used in the making of cheese and related products.

In 2017, FDA issued guidance on enforcement of ingredient labeling of ultra-filtered milk but says as the marketplace has evolved, it wants to give interested parties another opportunity to comment on issues in the previous rulemaking.

Ultra-filtered milk is mechanically filtered and leads to a higher concentration of protein in milk while separating some lactose, water and other nutrients.

Comments will be accepted until March 30th.
