FDA provides draft guidance for over the counter animal drugs
The FDA has published its draft guidance on bringing over the counter antibiotics voluntarily under veterinarian oversite for animals including beef and dairy cattle.
The proposed guidance is part of the agency’s five-year plan for supporting antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary settings.
Veterinarians would have two years to transition to administering dosage forms of approved medically important antimicrobials for all animals, including injectable or intra-mammary products currently available over the counter for beef and dairy cattle.
