FCC proposes $20.4 billion to expand rural broadband

The Federal Communications Commission is proposing a fund of $20.4 billion to get high-speed internet to rural homes. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai says the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund is the biggest step the agency has taken to close the digital divide, the areas that lack access to adequate broadband.

In the first of two phases the FCC would target $16 billion to areas not served by broadband service. The second phase will focus on unserved households in areas partially served.

The Rural Digital Opportunity Fund will be voted on by the commission at the end of this month.
