Farmland prices continue to soar

A farm real estate appraiser says Iowa landowners have been taking advantage of historically high prices.

Jim Rothermich, vice president of Iowa Appraisal, tells Brownfield, “The month of June come in at record high,” he said. “My auction data suggests 19,735 acres went to auction. Compared to last June 2021, that’s a 120 percent increase.”

He says it’s a buyer’s market. “Some of these farms have been held in tight hands for over 100 years,” he said. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy these farms that have never been to the market.”

Even with high prices, Rothermich says the best time to buy farmland is when it’s available.
