Farmers told at meetings to brace for more flooding

Farmers in northwest Missouri are being told to brace for more flooding this spring. State and federal officials met with farmers in Rock Port and St. Joseph to answer questions and concerns.

Missouri Farm Bureau President Blake Hurst says the window of opportunity to convince federal officials of the need for change is closing. Hurst says the focus needs to be on how Congress instructs the Corps to better manage the Missouri River.

“We have to do it quickly. Because I think we’ve got, politically, the stars are fairly well aligned. I think we’ve got some support in Washington that we may not have for years from now or 10 years from now. So, we should move forward with haste.”

Floodwaters covered nearly one-and-a-half million acres of Missouri farmland last year.

Saturated soil and broken levees make the area vulnerable for more flooding this year.
