Some farmers are still making seed decisions

A seed dealer says there are still quite a few farmers making seed decisions now, in late March.

Chad Staudinger

Chad Staudinger with Dairyland Seed Company tells Brownfield he sees more opportunity to pick up seed sales during the farm show.  “This year, there’s probably more indecision in the marketplace than we’ve seen in years past, I would say due to the economy and the late fall, late harvest season last year.”

And, Staudinger says he definitely sees a trend towards more soybean acres.  “The trend in Wisconsin, which is the territory that I work in, the trend is definitely towards more soybeans and less corn I think due to the economy and the prices that we’re in.”

Staudinger says he hasn’t seen a lot of request for dicamba-tolerant varieties but is getting a lot of sales for disease-resistant soybeans.  “White mold is kind of the silent killer that creeps in on you, and once you have it, it’s in your fields and you’re going to deal with it for years to come, so I think finding those varieties that are resistant to ward off that infection is very important and we do see that trend.”

Staudinger tells Brownfield the most popular seed varieties are still available, but orders should be placed soon to get them in time for planting.

Staudinger spoke to Brownfield at the WPS Farm Show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
