Farmer’s share of food dollar declining

A new report by USDA says farmers are continuing to earn less of what consumers spend on food while foodservice earns more.

The Economic Research Services says the farm share of the food dollar dropped more than one percent in 2017 to 14.6 cents, the sixth-straight year the farm share dropped.

It was the first time in two years prices received by farmers at the farmgate went up, but so did food purchases away from home which drives down the overall share.
