Farmers says “inconsistent” best describes year so far

Northwest Indiana farmer Alan Washburn says 2017 will be known for its variability.  “I have neighbors that have replanted twice and say they will not replant a third time,” he says.  “I’m fortunate that I didn’t have to replant anything.  It all got into the ground and I finally got it all out of the ground.  I have some underwater – but it is what it is.  We have to deal with it.”

Looking ahead to the summer, he tells Brownfield he has one concern.  “That someone is going to shut the water off and we’re not going to have anymore,” he says.

Washburn says he’s had a lot of windshield time and across the Midwest – no two fields look alike.  “There are areas of the Corn Belt that are far and away ahead of the part of Indiana where I’m from,” he says.  “Then there are parts where they have been waiting for it to dry out so they could get things in the ground the first time.”
