Farmers plan changes for 2023 growing season

Weather brought several challenges in 2022 and some farmers are making changes for next year.

Southwest Iowa farmer Duane Aistrope tells Brownfield he’s eliminating cover crops from his rotation.

“Last spring, it was so cold and dreary that we could not get our cover crops to kill off,” Aistrope said. “This fall, I broke the mold I’ve been in for several years and I did not put any cover crop down. I will probably go back to it because I can see the benefits of it, but it cost me a lot in yield last year.”

Eastern Illinois farmer John Yeley says he’s changing his herbicide program after some products struggled during the dry summer.

“Just due to the fact I didn’t get good control on the waterhemp,” Yeley said. “In corn, that is unacceptable because it is pretty easy to kill in corn.”

Yeley says he’s also making some changes to his corn varieties.

The farmers made their comments on Brownfield’s Tailgate Talk this week.
