Farmers need wireless connectivity to stay relevant

The CEO of an Indiana software company says farmers are falling behind because of a lack connectivity.

Clear Object’s John McDonald says if the future of farming is based on the ability to improve yields through automated farming, then farmers with little to no connectivity are at a major disadvantage.

“If you can’t get data back live and be able to make changes and adapt to what’s happening in that field, you’re not going to be in a good position compared to the farmer who can,” he says.

He tells Brownfield because connectivity is vital to agriculture’s advancement, the ag industry should work proactively to help farmers to get that land connected instead of waiting for the broadband industry to invest in Rural America.

“We can do that by providing lower interest loans or no interest loans that allow them to get access, to be able to do best practices, or maybe group them in cooperatives,” he says.

He says it’s necessary that farmers are able to use the data they collect every day and if they’re not, they won’t be able to keep up with the competition.
