Farmers for Climate Action rallying in D.C.

Farmers For Climate Action is hosting a rally in Washington, D.C. this week.

Minnesota urban farmer Taya Schulte says she’s rallying because she has a vested interest in the next farm bill.

“As a small farmer, I think we get left out of the farm bill a lot. But like so much of the details of the farm bill absolutely affects every single aspect of what it’s like to be a small farmer.”

She tells Brownfield her farm is built on two former parking lots in the Twin Cities that are about to be developed into housing.

“We didn’t have the opportunity to renew our leases, but we did get an opportunity to purchase a farm in western Wisconsin that we hope to be closing on this spring.”

Schulte says there will be opportunities to visit with lawmakers Wednesday and she plans to ask for policies that provide enough capital for young people to acquire land and for the Farm Service Agency to “take small farming seriously.”
