Farmers face challenge of growing more food, improving soil health

Indiana State Conservationist Jane Hardisty says soil health is necessary to continue feeding a growing population.

She tells Brownfield farmers are doing their part to grow more food, but with lower farm incomes they also need to be able to improve their bottom line.

“We’re getting all the answers so farmers can minimize their inputs but optimize what their yields and profits are,” she says.

She says improving soil biology helps to lower production costs for farmers as they learn how to better manage weeds and nutrients.
