Farmers encouraged to participate in redistricting processes

Michigan Farm Bureau is encouraging farmers to take part in the state’s congressional redistricting process.

Matt Kapp tells Brownfield public hearings are taking place every Tuesday and Thursday now until July 1st.

“There’s an Independent Citizenship Redistricting Commission that is responsible for redrawing all of the legislative districts and they’re conducing 16 public comment hearings all around Michigan,” he explains.

Citizens can share their input in-person, virtually or through an online portal.

Kapp says Farm Bureau supports compact, contiguous districts with as few breaks in township and county lines as possible.

“We believe a township or a county is a community of interest and we would encourage them to keep those municipal lines together if possible,” he says.

He says each district will grow some as Michigan moves from 14 to 13 congressional seats.
