Farmers assess crop damage from strong storms

Some farmers in southern Iowa were impacted by Thursday’s round of severe storms.

Jeff Jorgenson of Sidney says strong winds knocked down most of his corn crop.

“There is lean, twist, uprooting, and I think there is some broke off,” he said. “We’re going to know a lot more by the middle of next week.”

He tells Brownfield, “It changes what your outlook is on how much more inputs we want to put in this crop.”

Jorgenson says he’s hopeful the crop can recover.

“It’s the ‘gooseneck’ as we call it in agriculture,” he said. “Everybody knows that word and cringes when you think about harvest, but we are resilient, and we will figure out a way. If we have a crop there to harvest, we will be ready to do everything we need to get it done.”
