Farmers are waiting record amounts of time for new equipment

The head of sales of marketing with a global equipment manufacturer says this the longest producers have had to wait for equipment.

Daryl Theis with CLAAS North America tells Brownfield he doesn’t expect that to change anytime soon. “For example, most of the combines or the chopper or the tractors, (we) had an idea of what we’re going to make and then make changes to those machines if needed within 3 to 6 months,” Theis says. “But we’re just in a time where we have to stretch all of our electronic sensors and components. Getting enough of them right now is a challenge and we can’t get enough.”

He says he’s looking at 18-to-24-month lead times, but that should shrink over time when there aren’t as many disruptions to the supply chain. “Let’s call that maybe 2024 would be a time where we would expect that to comeback. Certainly, at some point, we would expect the raw material costs to comeback. Largely, we’re talking about steel or metal-type components along with oil.”

He says farmers looking to purchase new equipment should know the specifications they want to help speed up the process.
