Farmer pleased with start to 2023 crops

Eastern Nebraska farmer Mitch Oswald says early season crop development has exceeded his expectations.

“Honestly, everything looked like it has emerged really well around here, even from the lack of moisture.”

But, he tells Brownfield, the corn crop didn’t always look this good when he decided to replant a few weeks ago. “We had fertilizer burn really bad from it being so dry and planted what we thought was on top of the fertilizer, but apparently the fertilizer didn’t settle out at all with due to the lack of moisture, so it just kind of sat around.”

Oswald says he’s been irrigating fields to help get the crop off to a good start, but dryland acres are already beginning to struggle.
