Farmer hopes to wrap up planting this week

After recent rains slowed planting progress, West Central Ohio Farmer Patty Mann says they should finally finish planting this week.

“We are actually still today trying to wrap up the last few fields of corn and by mid- to late- week we should have all the planting wrapped up,” she says.

She says some fields had to be replanted.

“We have replanted two fields of soybeans and I know in Auglaize County which is about as far west as we go – there were a lot of farmers last week that were spotting in both corn and soybeans,” she says. “We mostly have corn in that area, but I think overall we’re going to be okay with corn.”

Mann, president of the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association, says markets are also top of mind.

“There have been some pluses the last couple of days and I know soybeans broke through a key resistance point,” she says. “I know June is usually a volatile month so hopefully we’ll see some more upward movement and get prices back up to where farmers are willing to price some more new crop.”

Mann grows corn and soybeans in Shelby County.
