Farmer encourages others to consider high oleic soybeans for 2021

A soybean grower is encouraging other farmers to consider planting high-oleic soybeans in 2021.

Kevin Wilson began planting high oleic beans in addition to conventional soybeans 7 years go on his farm in Walton, Indiana.

“Farmers that can take advantage of a location that receives high oleic beans, I hope they take a look at them and see if it is something that will work into their system. I think they’d be pleased with the outcome.”

He tells Brownfield there are no management differences from conventional soybeans and growers get a 50-70 cent bushel per acre premium for high oleic beans.

“Fertilization, the way we treat the fields, work the fields and plant them is all the same. We just try to keep the planter and equipment cleaned up so when they crush them they will be pure.”

Wilson plans to harvest 1,000 acres of high oleic beans this fall and says if not for storage restrictions he would plant more next year.
