Farmer discusses tough decisions ahead of ‘22

There are tough decisions on the horizon for many farmers battling record input costs for the 2022 growing season.  

Southern Ohio farmer Greg Corcoran is one of them.

“When it comes down to the cost we need to sit back and take a look at what we’re going to do next year,” he says. “Are we going to push hard for corn or are we going to back off on it.”

He tells Brownfield next year’s crop rotation will have more soybeans.

“That’s just because of our rotation, not so much because of any changes we’re making,” he says. “But, that may benefit us due to high input costs.”

Corcoran says he’s less concerned about potential supply chain disruptions limiting access to inputs than he is rising costs. He uses fertilizer as an example.

“Fertilizer prices are astronomical right now and to think of putting a crop in with the rising prices is difficult,” he says.

Corcoran grows corn, soybeans, and popcorn in Ross, Pike, and Scioto counties.
