Farmer describes average to above-average yields

A northwest Indiana farmer says harvest is progressing quickly.

Natasha Cox grows corn and soybeans with her husband in Benton County.

“We’re starting to see some folks getting close to wrapping up; we’re seeing some fertilizer being applied, a lot of tillage work being done, and yields have really been all over the board,” she says.

She tells Brownfield, “there were some pleasant surprises in the soybean crop in some areas. We weren’t sure what the August rains were going to do for us, and I’d say that the corn crop was really a story of whether it was under irrigation and what the soil capacity was. We had a dry June and July here in the state of Indiana and the rest of the corn belt. It’s been an average- to slightly-above-average year. Harvest seems to be ticking ahead at a good pace even though it got started a little late due to later planting dates.”

Cox also serves on the Indiana Corn Marketing Council board of directors.
