The number of farm workers in the Great Lakes region is on the rise.

In its Farm Labor Report, the USDA says 59,000 workers were hired directly by farms in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan during the week of October ninth.

That’s 1,000 more than the last reference period of July 10th through 16th.

Farm operators also paid their workers higher salaries in the fall, averaging nearly $14.70 per hour.

The number of hours worked averaged more than 42, an increase of three hours from mid-July.

Nationally, there were five percent fewer farm workers in October compared to the same period a year ago.

Meanwhile, the national average wage is $13.25 per hour, three percent higher than 2015.
