Farm insurance part of farm safety

A farm insurance agent says having appropriate insurance on the farm can help prevent accidents and save farmers money. Chris Buechle, a commercial farm ranch loss control specialist with American Family Insurance, says they help farmers and ranchers recognize hazards and understand the indirect costs of not preventing them.

Buechle says seldom does anyone make money by making a claim on insurance, “There’s always time and secondary expense and downtime and those things that cost our insurance and the farmers and ranchers that insure with us more than what they get paid directly from the claim. And, if we can help avoid that we help not only our bottom line by reducing claims but THEIR bottom line.”

Buechle tells Brownfield Ag News insurers are a second set of eyes and they’re used to looking for things that farmers often overlook, “Like some missing shields on grain bins or extension cord that just got hung up and used for permanent wiring over a course of time that it wasn’t intended for – little things like that.”
