Farm groups calls for Kansas to investigate meatpackers

The Family Farm Action Alliance is calling for Kansas state leaders to follow Missouri’s lead and investigate meatpackers for price fixing and collusion. The alliance sent letters to the Kansas Attorney General, House Speaker and Senate President urging them to use their subpoena power to investigate record profits by meatpackers.

Mike Callicrate, a Family Farm Action member, says meatpackers were prospering while cattle ranchers were going out of business during processing slowdowns because of the pandemic. He says rural communities are being lost as a result.

Missouri Representative David Gregory filed a petition in February to the House of Representatives requesting the Special Committee on Government Accountability to investigate the meatpacking industry.

Family Farm Action says it will provide Kansas officials the needed support to take on the ‘big meatpackers’. The alliance is encouraging any farmers and ranchers who have been harmed by the meatpackers to reach out to them.
