Farm Credit Mid-America helps young farmers improve profitability

Gary Matteson, with Farm Credit Council, says the Know to Grow program helps farmers increase skills, manage cost of production, and understand what ag lenders need.

“They need to be flexible to face their future,” he says. “They need to have the capability to plan and be able to express their plan in numbers so a financial partner,  business partner, or a spouse can understand what the inputs are and what the expected outcomes are going to be.”

He tells Brownfield farmers need to be ready to change their concept of farming as the industry changes. He says that could include selling items directly to consumers through a farmer’s market.

“If I can come up with a budget for this new idea, this new enterprise, I can bring that home and talk about numbers and what kind of opportunity this is,” he says.

Matteson spoke to Brownfield at the Farm Credit Mid-America Know to Grow conference in downtown Indianapolis.
