Farm bill hearings resume this week

The ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee has the Biden administration’s climate policies in mind as farm bill hearings resume.

John Boozman tells Brownfield he does not want the President Biden’s 30×30 or American the Beautiful plan, an effort to conserve 30% of America’s lands and waters by 2030, influencing any part of the farm bill, especially the conservation title. He says he expects this to be debated during the upcoming hearings.

“We’d have to idle a lot of productive farm land and markets would go away. Production would go overseas where they would not produce in the environmentally sensitive way our American farmers do.”

Boozman says the ag industry has emphasized the importance of making sure conservation programs do not get tied to crop insurance.

“What I’m doing now is really doing listening sessions with members of Congress. The things that come up constantly with them is anything we do will be voluntary, it’s not going to be a one size fits all and making sure the safety nets are in place.”

The first farm bill hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
