Fall weather should be ideal for harvest

Farmers should see good weather conditions as harvest continues. Dr. Jeffery Rogers, Climatologist for the State of Ohio says the fall weather outlook should provide for dry conditions and more sunny days for farmers to make headway on the fall harvest.

“For the rest of the fall we’re experiencing pretty much normal conditions according to the weather service forecast. But we are starting out dry and as long as this warm weather stays with us it will probably stay dry.” says Rogers.

Looking ahead to winter, Rogers says wet weather conditions can be expected, and this year researchers are calling for wet conditions for the most part and there will be cold snaps across the Midwest.

“We’re expecting temperatures to be slightly below normal with wild swings in which the temperatures might even challenge record highs. And then cold fronts lead to these severe cold waves that can bring temperatures subzero.” says Rogers.

Rogers says the combination of warm and cold temperatures will be hard for cover crops and winter wheat moving into 2017. Brownfield spoke with Rogers at the Farm Science Review.
