Fall manure management tips

An extension manure management specialist has some advice for farmers planning to apply fertilizer this fall.

Melissa Wilson with the University of Minnesota says this is a good time to look over manure application equipment.

“Make sure you have your safety plan in place in case something goes wrong. And if you’re applying pretty early, consider putting on a cover crop or nitrification inhibitor.”

She tells Brownfield that will help preserve nitrogen if soil temperatures remain warm.

“And if you can wait, wait until soil temperatures have cooled down. That will help preserve some of your nitrogen as well.”

Wilson adds that manure mixed with bedding might work best in the fall because it gives nitrogen more time to break down.
