Ethanol supporters rally to protect RFS

A board member with the National Corn Growers Association says ethanol supporters are ready to protect the Renewable Fuel Standard.

Tom Haag of Minnesota tells Brownfield the ag sector is mobilizing ahead of a Monday morning meeting at the White House to discuss the RFS.

“We put a notice out through our grassroots, calling politicians in D.C.  (we) explained to them that a cap on RINs is devastating to us because of the loss of income we’re having right now, and adding this on to it would be that much more devastating.”

Haag says NCGA anticipates the Trump Administration will propose a cap on RIN credits in exchange for greater Reid Vapor Pressure relief.

“From the Corn Grower’s side that’s not a good situation.  By capping RINs, that’s going to take all the mechanisms we have had in our toolbox using RINs for higher ethanol blends right down to hardly anything.”

Haag says the NCGA board agrees that if the outcome of Monday’s meeting is not favorable, the Association would likely join any lawsuit challenging RFS changes.
