Ethanol leaders say EPA’s handling of Small Refinery Waivers might influence the farm vote

Ethanol leaders say the Trump administration’s handling of small refinery exemptions might be a factor in how farmers vote in the Presidential election.

Brian Jennings with the American Coalition for Ethanol says, “The Renewable Fuel Standard and the refinery waivers specifically, absolutely is a factor.”

Jennings tells Brownfield farmers are talking. “I’ve talked to enough farmers in keys states like Iowa, key states like Wisconsin that the President won in the 2016 election that he would desperately like to recapture for the 2020 election, and I’ve talked to those farmers and ethanol supporters who voted for him that are now undecided.”

Geoff Cooper with the Renewable Fuels Association agrees. “These waivers that have been handed out like trick-or-treat candy to refiners is absolutely on the minds of farmers across the corn belt and could definitely play into their decision on election day.”

Cooper tells Brownfield they have implored the White House to get EPA to follow through on Trump’s commitments to the ethanol industry.

Thirty-one small refinery waivers were granted by Trump’s EPA in 2018, and the 2019 list hasn’t been released yet.  A recent court decision ruled in favor of ethanol producers, overturning three of the small refinery waivers.

Trump assured farmers and producers in Iowa last June they would be better off with year-round E15 sales and better trade deals.
