Ethanol groups pleased with Senate Democrats’ climate plan

Ethanol groups are pleased with Senate Democrats’ inclusion of biofuels in their Climate Crisis Committee plan. Growth Energy, the American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE) and the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) commended the committee’s plan to expand the role of ethanol and other biofuels in the battle against climate change. The Democrats’ plan details a framework for future legislation to address climate change.

ACE CEO Brian Jennings says his group appreciates the committee acknowledging the role of alternative fuels in reducing the carbon intensity of the transportation sector. He says the group is also happy about the need the committee sees for policy like a Low Carbon Fuel Standard because of what Jennings calls the improper implementation of the RFS in recent years.

The Democrat’s report calls on Congress to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050. The plan includes stimulating economic growth by boosting annual climate action spending to at least 2 percent of GDP. The senate report also endorses the value of carbon sequestration, noting that it can help sustainable farmers survive and thrive.

The Senate committee’s report complements recommendations issued earlier by a similar committee in the U.S. House.
